Meet the mind: get to know our Executive Administrator, Lisa Scarratt

Our Meet the Mind series continues; after we got to know a bit more about Director, Vicki Shouksmith, this time we spoke to Executive Administrator, Lisa Scarratt!

So, Lisa – tell us about your role and your background prior to mmc

I studied Technology Management at the University of Sunderland, which gave me a great mix of both technical know-how and an understanding of how people and processes fit together. After graduating, I joined BT in 1997. At the time, it was only meant to be a stopgap while I figured out what I wanted to do with my career. But one thing led to another – I was offered a permanent role, then a promotion – and before I knew it, I’d built a career there.

I ended up staying with BT for 22 years, most of that time as a Project Manager, which I absolutely loved. It was such a rewarding role because I got to work with great teams, solve challenges, and see projects come to life from start to finish.

In 2019, I took redundancy due to personal circumstances. It was a big change after so many years, but it also gave me the chance to think about what I wanted next. That’s what eventually led me to MMC — and I’ve been grateful for that new chapter ever since.

Over the past 3 years, what have been the stand-out projects or contracts where you’ve noticed the impact we’ve made?

One project that really stands out for me is the work we did for Pride North East. It was such a memorable experience because you could feel the energy and see the positive impact of being part of something that celebrates inclusivity and gives people a platform to be heard.

Another highlight has to be the work we did with the Durham Police and Crime Commissioner. Speaking directly with residents to gather their views on policing and then feeding that back felt really meaningful. You knew those conversations were helping to shape decisions that mattered to the community.

That said, I honestly see value in everything MMC does. Whether it’s a big, high-profile piece of work or something smaller and more behind the scenes, it all comes back to the same thing: giving people a voice and making sure it counts.

What’s the one thing that always helps your mental wellbeing whilst juggling your work and family life?

Exercise is my go-to for keeping my mental wellbeing in check. Zumba & Rockbox, especially, never fails to put a smile on my face – the music, the energy, and just being able to switch off and enjoy it really lifts my mood. I also love getting out for a run; it clears my head and gives me that bit of space to reset.

And of course, nothing beats spending time with family and friends. Whether it’s catching up over a meal, a walk, or just laughing together, those moments remind me of what’s important and keep me grounded. Between Zumba, running, and being around the people I love, I always find my balance again.

And outside of work, what do you enjoy?

I love making the most of my downtime.  I love getting out with friends / family for a drink and food (cocktails are always a win!). I’m a big fan of exploring new places and just wandering around, finding those random hidden gems in a city you’d never spot if you weren’t looking.

But most of all, I enjoy time with family and friends. I’ve got two teenage boys, 14 and 17, so life at home is never dull – let’s just say there’s usually a lot of noise, laughter, and empty snack cupboards! Between family chaos, catching up with friends, and staying active, that’s what really makes me happiest outside of work.
